Our History

Centre for Palliative Care (CPC)

In October 2007, Palliative care was first initiated in Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) as a small rudimentary service. To take a pioneer role for the development of palliative medicine in the country, in 2011, the university authority decided to create the ‘Centre for Palliative Care (CPC)’. more detail Since then, the centre has been actively engaged not only in developing a replicable model service but also pursuing awareness creation amongst health professionals and the community at large. It has also organized education and training programs, seminars and workshops and initiated research activities. The centre is actively engaged in doing so.

Our Service

CPC provides a 24/7 telephone service for our registered patients. The main purpose of this service is to provide palliative care for those patients who live far away from Dhaka city in remote area and make it cost effective.

OUT PATIENT

The services provided by centre includes in-patient, out-patient and day care facilities, weekly lymphoedema clinic as well as a 24/7 telephone service and a home care service.In 2015, a total of 1713 consultations were given in out-patient (OP) out of which 756 were newly registered patients and 957 for the old patients.

IN PATIENT

The Centre accommodates 18 beds in the in-patient (IP) ward where, in 2015, a total of 436 patients were admitted. It has a one bed day care service, particularly for blood transfusion, ascites tapping, wound management and morphine trial for pain management. In this one bed, in 2015 only 67 patients availed the service.

LYMPHOEDEMA CLINIC

The weekly lymphoedema clinic which is run on Mondays accommodated 72 patients in 2015. Telephone service for the registered patients of CPC received 937 calls from the patients in 2015 from all over Bangladesh. Telephone service is a link between CPC and the patients who has gone home after availing treatment for symptom management.

HOME CARE SERVICE

Centre for Palliative Care organized home care service for 328 patients in 2015. There are some criterias which allow the patients to avail home care service. They express their desire to live with family members and wish to die at the comfort of home surroundings.

TELEPHONE SERVICE

Centre for Palliative Care (CPC) provides a 24/7 telephone service for our registered patients. The main purpose of this service is to provide palliative care for those patients who live far away from Dhaka city in remote area and make it cost effective.

SLUM PROJECT

CPC has a home care program at free of cost to support those patients (at least 2 visit per month) who live in Dhaka city and are unable to come to the hospital, want to access the service at their own home environment and wish to stay home in their last days.

Basic Certificate Course in Palliative Medicine & Nursing (BCCPM & BCCPN):

Till now CPC has organized total 15 batches of the six-week Basic Certificate Course in Palliative Medicine for Doctors (97 participants) and nine batches of six-week Basic Certificate Course in Palliative Nursing (Course Module) for registered Nurses (58 participants).
